inspired by the portuguese discoveries, bartolomeu bistro & wine is named after the portuguese explorer bartolomeu dias. born in 1450, he was a nobleman of the portuguese royal family. in 1488, he was the first person to sail around the southern tip of africa and the cape of good hope, establishing the sea route from europe to asia. bartolomeu dias was the first european to land in what is now south africa. bartolomeu bistro & wine is an integral part of “ torel 1884 suites & apartments ”, a luxury boutique hotel located in the heart of porto that opened in february 2019, belonging to the torel boutiques hotel collection. torel boutiques is the story of three people whose paths crossed in lisbon when they all decided to change their lives: joão pedro tavares, barbara ott, and ingrid koeck. starting with the luxury boutique hotel “ torel palace lisbon ” in lisbon in 2013, the five-star hotel “ torel avantgarde ” in porto featuring the restaurant and bar “ digby ” in 2017, followed by the torel 1884 suites & apartments, the “ torel palace porto” , a 5-star boutique hotel opened in 2020, along with the refined restaurant “blind” , and our most recent project, the five-star hotel “torel quinta da vacaria - douro valley” in the douro valley. all of our establishments embody the spirit of comfort and refinement, offering dedicated service and hosting our guests in a very personal way.
