Your local convenience store in Sawtry
In 1945 Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Green purchased the Sawtry business known as Lane & Westerman, which was established 60 years earlier and offered products ranging from food to paraffin, boots to suits, seeds to hardware goods and more.
As well as the shop in Green End Road, they owned a delivery van which until the 1930s was horse drawn. This was soon replaced by 2 mobile shops which between them called at almost every village and farmstead in an 8 mile radius.
By 1970, the delivery service was no longer needed due to the growth of supermarkets and more people having cars. Ironically in recent years the big grocers set up a delivery service, so once again, 50 years later we are offering the same with online and telephone ordering to collect or to be delivered.
In 1963 building work commenced on the new store opening and in 1966 the business welcomed the arrival of the Sawtry Post Office.
The shop was purchased by the Co-operative in 1973 and the following June the present shop was opened by John and his father and soon after was joined by David Green who became Postmaster.
2011 saw the shop shift away from being a typical newsagents and moving towards being a convenience store whilst continuing to give the same good value and local service that has been provided for 75 years. The extensive news delivery service by now covered eight neighbouring villages until being managed and operated for us by News Team in 2019.
With David’s retirement and the Post Office, after 50 year on site, being re-located a revamp in 2017 has meant that the shop now operates as a Premier Store and can offer even more great deals to customers!
