Baklava is a typical Turkish dessert made from many wafer-thin layers of dough sheets, butter, sugar syrup and nuts (mostly pistachios, but also walnuts or hazelnuts). The term baklava comes from Turkish and is related to the Mongolian term for "wrapping". It is common practice to distribute baklava to friends, acquaintances and neighbours on joyful occasions such as weddings, births or religious festivities.
